Family Fun & Learning

Summer offers a wonderful opportunity for families to relax, reconnect, and create lasting memories together. While students deserve a well-earned break, a little learning throughout the summer can help them stay sharp and confident for the upcoming school year.

The good news is that summer learning does not have to feel like school. Reading a book together, exploring a local park, cooking a meal, or simply having meaningful conversations can all help children continue developing important skills.

Research shows that students who stay engaged in reading, writing, problem-solving, and family conversations during the summer months are better prepared to start the next school year ready to learn. Even 20 minutes a day can make a significant difference.

This summer, we encourage families to focus on three simple goals:

  • Read every day
  • Explore something new
  • Spend quality time together

Family Reading Challenge

Reading is one of the most effective ways to prevent summer learning loss. Whether your child enjoys picture books, graphic novels, magazines, chapter books, or audiobooks, daily reading helps maintain vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills.

Try our Summer Reading Challenge:

□ Read for 20 minutes each day
□ Visit the library at least once this month
□ Read a book about Arizona
□ Read outside under a tree or on the patio
□ Read together as a family
□ Listen to an audiobook during a car ride
□ Share your favorite book with a friend

Make reading fun by allowing children to choose books that match their interests. When children read what they enjoy, they are more likely to continue reading throughout the summer.

Family Conversation Starter:
"What is the most interesting thing you've learned from a book this week?"

Turn Everyday Activities into Learning Opportunities

Learning happens everywhere, not just in classrooms.

At the grocery store:

  • Compare prices
  • Estimate the total cost
  • Practice counting money
  • Discuss healthy food choices

In the kitchen:

  • Measure ingredients
  • Practice fractions
  • Read recipes together
  • Learn about nutrition

During family outings:

  • Read maps and signs
  • Observe nature
  • Ask questions about what you see
  • Encourage children to describe their experiences

Simple daily activities help children practice math, reading, communication, and problem-solving skills without feeling like homework.

Explore Southern Arizona Together

We are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful and unique regions in the country. Summer is the perfect time to explore the natural wonders, history, and culture of southern Arizona.

Consider visiting:

As you explore, encourage children to become "summer scientists" by asking questions such as:

  • What animals did you observe?
  • What plants are unique to the Sonoran Desert?
  • What was something new you learned today?
  • What would you like to learn more about?

These conversations help build curiosity, observation skills, and a lifelong love of learning.

Unplug and Connect Family Challenge

Summer can easily become filled with screens and busy schedules. This month, challenge your family to unplug and connect one evening each week.

Ideas include:

  • Family game night
  • Backyard picnic
  • Evening walk
  • Storytelling night
  • Family movie discussion
  • Cooking a meal together
  • Stargazing in the Arizona sky

When families spend quality time together, children develop stronger communication skills, greater confidence, and a deeper sense of belonging.

Family Challenge:
Can your family complete four unplugged evenings during June?

Keep track on a calendar and celebrate your success together.

Create a Summer Memory Jar

One of the best ways to strengthen family connections is by creating shared memories.

Place an empty jar in a common area of your home. Throughout the summer, family members can write down favorite moments on slips of paper and place them in the jar.

Examples include:

  • A family outing
  • A funny moment
  • A new skill learned
  • A special accomplishment
  • A kind act from a family member

At the end of the summer, gather together and read each memory aloud. You may be surprised how many wonderful moments happened along the way.

Sometimes the smallest moments become the memories we treasure most.

Moments That Matter

Families are children's first and most important teachers.

Every conversation, shared meal, bedtime story, and family adventure helps children develop the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.

As we begin summer break, remember that meaningful learning does not require elaborate plans. Some of the best learning happens during everyday moments spent together as a family.

Thank you for your partnership throughout the school year. Together, we are helping every child grow, learn, and thrive.

We wish all of our families a safe, healthy, and joyful summer.
